The Dutch Media Authority, called "Commissariaat voor de Media", upholds the
rules which are formulated in the Dutch Media Act as well as in the
regulations based on this act for example the Media Decree. This is done by
the providing of information beforehand and by subsequent supervision.
Fairness and consistency are the Commissariaat's basic principles in
enforcing the Media Act. The activities of the Commissariaat focus on both
public service and commercial broadcasters and on cable operators. The
Commissariaat was founded on January 1st 1988, coinciding with the date of
commencement of the Dutch Media Act. The Commissariaat is an independent
administrative body situated in Hilversum. In the Board of
Commissioners are Prof. dr. Tineke Bahlmann (chair), Prof. dr. Jan van
Cuilenburg and Prof. dr. Madeleine de Cock Buning.
Divisions of the Dutch Media Authority
The three commissioners of "Commissariaat voor de Media" direct a body
of civil servants working for the following divisions:
The Division of Broadcasting Time and Cable Issues mainly deals with licensing, cable issues and programme councils.
The Division of Broadcasting Time and Cable Issues mainly deals with licensing, cable issues and programme councils.
The Division of Programme Supervision is concerned with the supervision of
programme regulations, surreptitious advertising and sponsoring. The workers
of this division are engaged in monitoring the programmes on radio and
television.
The Division of Legal Affairs deals with the procedural aspects of detected
offences and has a more general advisory function in legal matters.
The Division of Financial Supervision primarily supervises public
broadcasters' finances, including the new task of supervising their
commercial activities.
Apart from these divisions there is a Policy and Research Bureau and a Facility Management Bureau.
